Bulger's Mill

By Lucile C. Carlisle

Tallapoosa County, A History, 1976

Before Ourtown and Benson were established, the communities of Bulger’s Mill and Dyke were settled. Both were located just south of Ourtown on the road that leads to where the beautiful Willow Point Country Club is today.

Bulger’s Mill post office was one-half mile south of Ourtown at the Marion Russell plantation. There was a general store here, and it was commonly acknowledged that Aaron Burr ate lunch at this store. He had mortally wounded Alexander Hamilton in a duel and was passing through this community just before he was captured in Washington County, Alabama, and charged with treason.

There were stories of money being buried near this store at Bulger’s Mill. There were not banks in this section in the early days, and some of the settlers buried their gold or money in washpots or trunks.
